Sometimes a family needs a little push before they start eating healthy. The Guerra family is one of them.
They are a family of four with a history of heart disease and diabetes. Both parents worked and, as a result, they found little time for cooking healthy meals at home. That all changed when mom found herself dealing with high cholesterol and an extra 40 pounds and took notice of her shool–age–children eating more processed foods with high saturated fats, salt and sugar, and spending less time doing physical activities.
She knew something had to change. If it didn’t, she would be the mother of overweight children and the matriarch of an unhealthy family. Not the Guerras, she promised.
The journey to healthy eating wasn’t an easy one, but slowly mom started to make some simple changes. Serving food and beverages in smaller plates and cups with age–appropriate portions became her first step. Then she began cooking meals at home and incorporating healthy items such as brown rice, low sodium chicken broth and roasted seasoned vegetables.
After a few months she felt more confident to introduce a new recipe once a week. The family started to look forward to her new creations and soon started to contribute ideas to her recipe box.
Today, the Guerra family has not only shed pounds, they’ve lowered their cholesterol levels and saved enough money to go on a family camping trip!
Getting your family to eat healthy may take a few extra steps but it is worth the rewards of seeing your family develop healthy bodies.
